Has none. Zilch. Zero. Nada. Not one bad song. Haters will disagree and say that’s incorrect but well, to each his own. However there’s no denial that the Buga crooner has put in a timeline worthy of back-to-back hit songs, and it is only fitting to say we don’t expect anything mediocre from his live concert on December 23 at the Eko Convention Center, Victoria Island, Lagos. It is what we hope to be a night of fantastic music and great party vibes.

Sincerely? Yes. On December 18th at The Palms Lagos, BNXN will be hosting his very own live concert this December. If you haven’t heard any of the hit maker’s songs, please do so then you’d understand when we tell you ‘you need to be there!’’. Mark your calendar, schedule an Uber in advance, break up with your man if he isn’t a fan, block your girl if chances are that she’ll be upset on BNXN’s concert day. Occupants of Lagos were recently informed of other music genres that are much more relevant than Afrobeats, thanks Burna boy, but have you heard of Afro-depression? Apparently that’s the wave Omah Lay is on.

Just kidding. The title was not self acclaimed. The singer songwriter’s style of music is known by fans to be moody or thought-provoking hence the title. Omah Lay in a recent interview with Wunmi Bello was quick to accept the title, saying that  ‘Afro depression is a vibe’. He further explained that he is very open to accepting tags so long as people remain positively receptive to his music.

Before this dish found internet fame, even locally the ability to make any soup a star dish has given Pounded yam a 5-star rating in the community of other ‘swallows’. Paired with Efo riro, Afang soup, Egusi soup, Okro soup etc, Pounded yam always delivers in taste exactly what it should.

Suya

Suya! Some would argue that a properly prepared Suya is done only at night, in the open air and wrapped in an old newspaper with sprinkles of Suya pepper and veggies hugging the juicy, tender meat tightly. Many have questioned the reason why this particular meal is mostly sold at night, but again some of the others who have bought this meat in the daytime say it tastes different. It might just be a cultural preference in Nigeria, or a superstition, no one knows. However Suya is chosen to be prepared, this dish is unarguably a unifier of tribes.

Pepper soup

If you have a delicate palate, Pepper soup will give you a new appreciation for life- so it’s best to avoid it. This hot and spicy Nigerian soup is prepared with different kinds of proteins according to your preference- fish, chicken, or goat meat pepper with chunks of yam cut into it as an option. The soup is a combination of spices, including ginger, garlic, and chilli peppers. The intensity of this flavourful dish has made it somewhat of a challenge for most foreigners. Moi Moi

Here’s another yummy and satisfying Nigerian meal for first timers. Egusi soup

Egusi soup is made from crushed melon seeds and a variety of spices, dried fish, stock fish, veggies and palm oil.   It can be enjoyed as a lone meal, or paired with Pounded yam, Fufu, Wheat flour or any of your preferred swallow. Locally known as Akara, Beans cake is that one meal without a rival in Nigerian homes, especially during breakfast on weekends. “Ghana Jollof rice in Nigeria? You can’t be serious.” 

We are. The rivalry between Ghana and Nigeria for the bragging rights to the best seasoned rice is an old one – and a clear winner is yet to emerge. Neutrals tend to like one or the other, or both, so this may drag on for quite a while.

The recent popularity of Ghana Jollof in Nigeria is new and, to be honest, quite alarming. It begs so many questions. Did we finally have the texture, taste and consistency of both Nigeria and Ghana Jollof rice compared, tasted and rated by top culinary experts? Have Ghanaians invaded Nigeria en masse, bringing their cuisine with them? Or have Nigerians thrown in the towel and accepted defeat?

Fun-fact: Neither Ghana nor Nigeria should be credited with the origin of Jollof rice  – the dish didn’t even originate in either country.

In fact, the popularity of Ghana Jollof rice in Nigeria can be attributed to Twitter. Did you know that there have been over 100,000 tweets about the rivalry? Since the instigation of this topic on Twitter, there has been a rise in the awareness of Ghana’s version of Jollof Rice in Nigeria. Apparently, the Ghanaian version is preferred by some notable Naija celebrities who have voiced their opinions in hushed tones, to avoid the mouth of online Nigerian tweeps. However, the most adamant Nigerians are sticking to their guns in defence of their motherland’s version.

We can only conclude that the ‘war’ over which country has the best Jollof rice won’t be resolved anytime soon. It will continue well into the future and may be passed down to generations unborn.

On Saturday 11th September, the restaurant will be launched in grand style with a birthday celebration for Mo Abudu, founder and CEO of the EbonyLife group.
